Education outreach at Firelands Middle School

Perform for Happy Hour at Welcome Nursing Home
Welcome Nursing Home (417 S Main St) is in need of volunteers to perform for Happy Hour which is on Fridays 3:45 to 4:45. This position would continue for the rest of the year
They are also in need of short term volunteers, about 2-5, to help put up some holiday decorations. This needs to be done by 12/11. Alternative Gift Fair
The Alternative Gift Fair will take place in the Bent Corridor on the Science Center from December 6-11 at11:30 to 1:30. Gift items for sale at the fair include fair trade coffee, tea and chocolates, handmade textiles from Guatemala and Morocco, crafts from India and Oberlin, and much more.
The OSCA Nicaragua Sister Partnership Fundraiser
The OSCA Nicaragua Sister Partnership is a student group that facilitates OSCA's relationship with Nicaragua's National Union of Farmers and Ranchers. Through this student-run organization, OSCA gives money to a small chapter of UNAG in the poor, rural district of San Juan de Limay. The money helps women members of the union buy agricultural goods such as cattle and seed, which helps them, make a living. In addition to giving money, OSCA sends a student delegation every other year to Nicaraguan villages to strengthen our relationship with the women and to learn about how we can best help these women.
They are currently fundraising for this trip!
They are raffling off a Nicaraguan goody basket. This basket may include exciting things like fair trade coffee, handmade crafts, in addition to other surprises. Tickets cost $1 each. Read and Rise Program at the Harrison Cultural Community Center
The Lorain County Urban League (LCUL) and Harrison Cultural Community Centre (HCCC) are collaborating to open a Read and Rise program at HCCC .
The goals of the Read and Rise program are to improve literacy and social skills for all the children in the program. All children are able to read age-appropriate books independently by the time they are in the 4th grade or 10 years old.

Social Marketing Internship
Community-based learning opportunity for someone interested in social marketing and environmental issues. Providing Oberlin With Efficiency Responsibly (POWER) is a locally-based, non-profit program that reduces carbon emissions by making low-income homes more energy efficient. POWER seeks an intern to research principles of social marketing, conduct field research in the City of Oberlin, and develop a marketing plan. This position is for credit only; no funding is available. The intern will enroll in a private reading with Dr. Cindy Frantz, Department of Psychology. The intern will read primary literature related to social marketing, attitude change, and behavior change; this literature will inform the development of POWER’s marketing strategy. The intern will write white papers for the POWER board of trustees as well as draft a long-range marketing plan. The ideal candidate will have strong research skills, a basic knowledge of energy issues, a background in social psychology, and/or publicity experience. Let’s branch out. We’re looking for French and Spanish speakers to volunteer as tutors for Oberlin High School students (levels I-IV). Times are flexible, so commit to only as much as you can and want to.
Tutoring can benefit you just as much as your tutee. Engage in community service while brushing up on your grammar and improving your teaching skills. As a bonus, you'll probably find someone who's all ears when you launch into endless tales of adventures abroad for the thousandth time. Global Engagement Summer Institute.
The Northwestern University Center for Global Engagement is opening up a unique summer program in Bolivia, Nicaragua, India, and Uganda called the Global Engagement Summer Institute. Non-Northwestern students are eligible to participate in this program. The program involves a 7-day preparatory institute in Chicago, followed by an 8-week, team-based nonprofit immersion at one of our four sites. The program concludes with a three day summit in Chicago. You can also earn two Northwestern course credits through a weeklong training institute in Chicago
This is a great opportunity as it pairs rigorous academic training with hands-on international community development experience.
